Outdoor air is where indoor air comes from
Your house is not sealed. It breathes — through doors, windows, bath fans, dryer vents, and every unsealed seam in the ductwork running through your attic. Whatever the AQI reads outside today is the starting material for the air inside your home tonight.
The EPA has found indoor air is frequently more polluted than outdoor air, because the outdoor stuff gets in and then joins everything a house generates on its own — cooking particulates, dander, off-gassing, and dust the return duct keeps recirculating. Add Arkansas humidity and you have a system that either manages all of that or quietly makes it worse.
That's why we publish these numbers. Not as a weather widget — as the first half of a diagnosis.

Spring (March–May)
Tree pollen — oak, cedar, elm
Central Arkansas runs some of the heaviest tree-pollen counts in the country in early spring. It rides indoors on every open door and every leaky return duct, then recirculates through the house all day.
Summer (June–September)
Ozone, humidity & wildfire smoke
Heat cooks ground-level ozone, humidity climbs past 70%, and drifting wildfire smoke can push fine particulates up for days at a time. This is also when an undersized or struggling system quietly stops dehumidifying.
Fall (September–November)
Ragweed
Ragweed season overlaps with the first furnace runs of the year — which is also when a season's worth of dust burns off the heat exchanger. Two irritants at once, right when you close the windows.
Winter (December–February)
Dry air & a sealed house
The house is shut tight for months, so whatever is in the air stays in the air. Dry indoor air also makes dust and dander easier to keep airborne, and harder on your sinuses.

A 4–5 inch media filter captures far more than a 1-inch throwaway without choking airflow. Jamming a high-MERV 1-inch filter into a system that can't pull through it does more harm than good — the filter has to match the blower.

What is the air quality in Bryant and Little Rock today?
The live reading at the top of this page is measured near Bryant, Arkansas and refreshes daily. The big number is the AQI — think of it as a grade for the outside air: under 50 is clean, 51–100 is okay, and above 100 sensitive lungs start to feel it. Below it, each bar is one thing floating in the air — fine dust (smoke and haze), ozone (smog), regular dust and pollen, and exhaust gases — with a plain Low, Medium, or High next to each.
Does running my AC improve indoor air quality?
It can, but only through the filter and only when the blower is running. A cooling system moves and filters air as a side effect of doing its main job. If you want real air-quality improvement you need adequate filtration, sealed ductwork, humidity in the 45–55% range, and in some homes dedicated purification or fresh-air ventilation.
Should I close my windows when air quality is bad or pollen is high?
Yes. On high-pollen or smoke days, keep windows and doors closed and run your system's fan so air keeps passing through the filter rather than sitting still. If you have a fresh-air intake or an ERV, that is the day to reduce or pause outdoor intake.
What MERV filter should I use in an Arkansas home?
MERV is just a filter's catch strength — higher numbers catch smaller specks. For most homes a MERV 11 to 13 filter in a thick 4-inch or 5-inch cabinet is the sweet spot: it catches what matters without suffocating the blower. A thin 1-inch filter at that strength usually chokes airflow. The right answer depends on your specific system, which is something we measure, not guess.
Why does wildfire smoke from other states affect Arkansas air?
Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) travels for hundreds or thousands of miles in the upper atmosphere and settles into a region under the right wind pattern. That's why Central Arkansas can post elevated particulate readings with no fire anywhere nearby — and why filtration matters even when the sky only looks a little hazy.
How high does humidity get in Central Arkansas, and why does it matter?
Summer relative humidity here routinely runs 70% or higher. Indoors you want 45–55%. Above 60% you create conditions for mold, mildew and dust mites, and the house feels warmer than the thermostat says — which is why people keep lowering the setpoint and never feel comfortable.
