Every week a homeowner asks me some version of the same question: "Is all this AI stuff actually going to save me money, or is it hype?" It's a fair question, and most of the answers online are written by companies selling the thing. So I went looking for the numbers that come with a real source attached — and left out the ones that don't.

The claims I left out on purpose

Part of being useful is telling you what not to trust. These get repeated constantly and I could not find a primary source for any of them, so they're not in this article:

  • “Smart thermostats save 15-23% / $130-260 a year.” Contradicts ENERGY STAR's own 8%/$50 figure; appears only on vendor and affiliate pages.
  • “Contractors miss 60-80% of their calls.” Marketing from AI phone-answering companies; the numbers swing wildly with no primary source.
  • Predictive-maintenance “market will hit $100B+.” Competing private forecasts that disagree with each other — an estimate, not a fact.
